Marlene Renick, a patient at OhioHealth’s Marion Cancer Center, leads a group of women from the Marion Senior Center who focus on providing support to cancer patients. The group, known as Books, Balance & BS, originally began as a reading club nearly ten years ago but has since expanded its activities to include low-impact exercises and fundraising efforts.
Renick stepped into the leadership role when the group needed guidance. She explained her motivation by saying, “I wanted to join this group to read, meet, and connect – but there was an interest from the group in making it something more.”
The group is characterized by its sense of humor and camaraderie. Members have supported Renick during her cancer treatment by making T-shirts and coming together for various activities. “I used to be a shy person – but not anymore. This group of women is unique. They are truly an amazing group. We discuss everything – but we are focused on things that make us happy. We are here to have fun and support each other. It works well,” said Renick.
Recently, the group organized a raffle that raised $500. The funds were used to purchase T-shirts with easy port access for chemotherapy patients at the Marion Cancer Center.
A check presentation took place at the center in late July, where OhioHealth received the donation for purchasing these special shirts. Lucinda Pfeifer, program manager at Marion Cancer Center, commented on the occasion: “They are the sweetest group of ladies. The laughter, love and support these women brought to the center was so heartwarming. Their gift will help patients feel comforted and cared for.”
