The Kenton County Detention Center (KCDC) has announced the opening of applications for its inaugural Citizens Academy. This program is intended to educate residents about the role of the Detention Center in public safety and county operations.
The KCDC, a significant component of Kenton County's financial responsibilities, manages the housing, rehabilitation, and oversight of individuals in custody. The Citizens Academy will provide participants with a comprehensive view of the facility's operations and financial management, along with the challenges of modern correctional administration.
"KCDC is one of the most vital yet often misunderstood aspects of our community’s public safety infrastructure," stated Kenton County Jailer Marc Fields. "With this program, we want to provide transparency and help residents gain a broader perspective on the complexities of incarceration, rehabilitation, and reentry programs."
The six-week program includes hands-on learning activities such as guided tours of the detention facility, specialized unit walkthroughs, and presentations by KCDC staff, medical professionals, and rehabilitation experts. It will cover topics like mental health, substance abuse treatment, and reentry initiatives.
Residents participating in the Citizens Academy will better understand the detention center's role in public safety and the importance of its management for community welfare.
Applications for the initial session are now available online at KentonCounty.Org, with participation limited to 20 spots. Interested residents must submit applications by April 15.
The academy will start on April 17 and take place every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. over six weeks.
