Crews have started the final phase of renovations at the Historic Kenton County Courthouse in Independence. This stage focuses on modernizing the entrance, including adding a women's restroom, rebuilding the men's restroom, updating the lobby, and replacing old windows. Offices for both the Kenton County Sheriff and Property Valuation Administrator will also receive updates.

The improvements are part of the Fiscal Court's commitment to preserving history while providing functional spaces for residents. Previous work addressed structural issues from water damage and redesigned parking lots and sidewalks for better access and safety.

Kenton County Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann stated, "This building dates back to our County’s founding, which is why the Fiscal Court moved to ensure we not only preserve its legacy but also make it a space suitable to meet residents’ needs for generations to come. It’s exciting to be near the finish line and see the Courthouse get the attention it deserves."

During construction, the front entrance will be closed, but residents can use the back entrance. Monthly Fiscal Court meetings will move to 1840 Simon Kenton Way in Covington during this period.

Schrudde and Zimmerman are handling this $642,000 project expected to finish by October 2024. Simultaneously, a farmers market pavilion is being built nearby with funding from the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board and Durr Foundation. This pavilion is scheduled for completion by year-end 2024. The city of Independence will partner with Kenton County Parks & Recreation for scheduling events at this venue.
