Covington, Kentucky has achieved a perfect score for the third consecutive year on an index that measures inclusivity for LGBTQ+ individuals. The score, released by the Human Rights Campaign in their annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI), reflects Covington's commitment to inclusive laws, policies, and services.
The MEI evaluates 506 cities across the United States based on criteria such as non-discrimination laws, municipal services, and law enforcement practices regarding LGBTQ+ equality. Covington's officials attribute this consistent performance to efforts aimed at embedding diversity into city operations.
City Manager Ken Smith emphasized the city's proactive approach: “Supporting the LGBTQ+ community is a lot more than a parade, a festival, and drag shows... We’re proud of the City’s work in this area to back up our reputation for inclusiveness.”
In Kentucky, six cities were evaluated with Lexington and Louisville also achieving perfect scores alongside Covington. The high MEI score complements Covington’s image as an inclusive community through its brand identity and support of local LGBTQ+ events and organizations like NKY Pride Center.
A national site selection consultant highlighted Covington's history of human rights leadership in an economic development strategy report. This reputation is seen as beneficial for attracting creative talent and fostering economic growth.
