The Covington Police Department has been recognized as the "Public Safety Department of the Year" by the Kentucky Women’s Law Enforcement Network (KWLEN). The award was presented during KWLEN's 25th annual conference held in Bowling Green, acknowledging the department's commitment to promoting enthusiasm, harmony, gender equality, and diversity within both its ranks and the community.

KWLEN highlighted that the award is given to organizations demonstrating an open attitude and attentiveness to community needs. Covington City Manager Ken Smith praised the department for its efforts in making Covington a safe and welcoming city. He noted their initiatives such as the Community Liaison Unit and LGBT liaisons which aim to strengthen community ties.

Covington Police Chief Brian Valenti expressed his gratitude for the recognition from KWLEN. He emphasized that being acknowledged statewide underscores their efforts to build an inclusive community. Valenti's five-year strategic plan aims at adopting a community-oriented policing model with problem-solving as a core focus.

Sergeant Rachel White nominated the department for this accolade, commending Chief Valenti's leadership in fostering inclusion and collaboration with Covington's diverse population. She cited real changes following Valenti’s strategic plan, particularly through restructuring their Community Liaison team into a unit focusing on intelligence-led policing.

White noted improvements in officer training emphasizing "perishable skills" like defensive tactics. This initiative aims at keeping officers well-prepared while enhancing public safety.

Covington PD serves over 41,000 residents along with tourists and workers from outside town. White stated that these ongoing efforts contribute towards making Covington a safer and more inclusive place for all its inhabitants.
