Leagues Cup, an in-season club tournament featuring teams from Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX, begins its 2025 edition on July 29. The event is available exclusively on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV for viewers in more than 100 countries and regions.
This year marks the third installment of the Leagues Cup. The tournament introduces a revised format for 2025, with MLS vs. Liga MX matchups throughout Phase One and the Quarterfinals. A total of 62 matches will be played without ties. The knockout round concludes with the final scheduled for August 31.
The top three teams at the end of the tournament will receive automatic qualification to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, offering a path to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.
“I’m very excited to play in the Leagues Cup with San Diego FC,” said San Diego FC forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. “It’s going to be a great tournament between MLS and Liga MX, and a perfect opportunity to show what San Diego is made of.”
“I made my debut with Rayados de Monterrey during Leagues Cup, so the tournament holds special meaning for me,” said C.F. Monterrey midfielder Sergio Canales. “The arrival of more high-profile players in both leagues has only elevated its level. It will continue to gain popularity and grow in the years to come.”
In previous tournaments, Columbus Crew won the 2024 title by defeating Los Angeles Football Club after scoring twice in stoppage time. In 2023, Lionel Messi debuted for Inter Miami CF during Leagues Cup, where he scored ten goals across seven matches and was awarded both Golden Boot and MVP honors.
