Apple has unveiled macOS Tahoe 26, the latest version of its operating system for Mac computers. The update introduces a new design and features aimed at enhancing user productivity and experience. The design includes updates to the desktop, Dock, in-app navigation, and toolbars, with options for personalization through an updated Control Center and color choices for folders, app icons, and widgets.
Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, stated: “macOS is the heart and soul of the Mac, and with Tahoe, we’re building on what users love most. Whether you’re a power user or just getting started on Mac, there’s something for everyone.”
The Phone app from iPhone is now available on Mac via Continuity. This allows users to access familiar features such as Recents and Voicemails while introducing new capabilities like Call Screening and Hold Assist. Live Activities from iPhone can also be viewed on Mac.
Spotlight has received significant updates allowing users to execute actions directly within it. Users can perform tasks such as sending emails or creating notes without switching apps. Spotlight also offers new browsing experiences to find content faster.
Apple Intelligence expands with features like Live Translation for seamless communication across languages in Messages and FaceTime. Shortcuts have been enhanced with intelligent actions that automate complex tasks using Apple Intelligence models.
Additional updates include improvements to Genmoji and Image Playground for creative expression. Reminders can now automatically categorize action items using Apple Intelligence.
For gaming enthusiasts, macOS Tahoe introduces Apple Games—a dedicated app providing a centralized hub for games—and Metal 4 technology offering advanced graphics capabilities.
Other notable features include enhancements to Safari's performance compared to Chrome; updates in Messages; Journal's availability on Mac; improved Photos organization; redesigned FaceTime interface; expanded Notes functionality; accessibility upgrades including Magnifier on Mac; password management tools; among others.
The public beta will be available next month through the Apple Beta Software Program before its official release this fall as a free software update. Certain features require supported devices including specific iPhone models running compatible language settings.
