Doctors in central Ohio have reported an increase in cancer rates among younger patients, following a nationwide trend. Vijay Kudithipudi, MD, a radiation oncologist with OhioHealth, remarked, “We are seeing it in our practice … and also nationally.” Although the cause is not clear, there are some potential contributors.

Dr. Kudithipudi suggested lifestyle factors as a possible influence, emphasizing that habits like smoking cessation, reducing alcohol consumption, and engaging in regular physical activity can help decrease cancer risk. “If you can get 10 to 20 minutes of what we call moderate activity, which is walking, playing with your kids, things like that, that has been shown to reduce the rate of cancer occurrence,” he said.

Dietary changes, such as replacing processed foods with fruits and vegetables and maintaining regular health screenings, are recommended. Dr. Kudithipudi noted, “Screening is fundamental. The goal is to catch something before it causes a problem.”

The cancers most commonly emphasized for early detection include breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal, with effective screening methods available. While typically promoted for older adults, younger individuals are encouraged to be vigilant, especially if symptoms arise.

Dr. Kudithipudi advised younger people to establish a robust healthcare team, starting with a primary care physician who can coordinate specialist care. “It can be scary to hear that word [cancer] or even the thought of that word,” he stated. “But whether close to home or if it needs to be somewhere further away, we can get you the care you need.”

Dr. Kudithipudi provides cancer care in Columbus and Marion and is expanding his services to Cambridge.
