Woodward Career Technical High School recently hosted a naturalization ceremony where 50 individuals became new American citizens. The event provided students with an opportunity to learn about citizenship through direct experience.
During the ceremony, students observed presentations on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, participated in the Pledge of Allegiance, and witnessed both the Oath of Allegiance and the awarding of Certificates of Naturalization.
“Today is a good day for our students to witness. This shows everyone is included, no matter what country you are from,” said Woodward Principal Sam Yates.
CPS Interim Superintendent Shauna Murphy remarked, "The naturalization ceremony is profoundly inspiring, not only for those becoming new citizens but for our Woodward Career Technical High School students who were able to witness and participate in the ceremony." She added that experiencing this process firsthand provides students with a unique perspective on citizenship.
The school's marching band performed during the event, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. Students also shared readings as part of the proceedings.
“It’s very amazing to see somebody who has taken years out of their time to try to be a citizen to finally be accepted,” commented Amya Hudson, a junior at Woodward.
