Facebook's parent company, Meta Platforms, has recently announced the expansion of its Mesa Data Center campus, according to a Mesa Independent report.
Plans for expansion include the addition of three new buildings, bringing the total number of structures on campus to five and totaling over 2.5 million square feet of space.
"So these buildings and the hardware inside help bring Meta’s apps and services to billions of people around the world every day,” David Williams, community development manager for Meta, said at a press conference. “Once completed, this data center will support over 200 operational jobs and represent an investment of more than $1 billion in Mesa.”
The first phase of construction for the almost 400-acre site at the southeast corner of Elliot and Ellsworth roads is currently underway.
The duration of construction is expected to be four years, with a peak workforce of 1,500 to 2,000 skilled workers.
Additionally, Williams announced a donation of $50,000 from Meta to the Mesa College Promise, a program that helps Mesa high school graduates enroll into Mesa Community College.
"It’s a great place to live and to work,” Kelly Barr, SRP chief strategy, corporate services and sustainability executive said. “I think there’s no surprise; all you have to do is look around here to see that this area and the entire valley, quite frankly, is experiencing an incredible economic boom and it is driving the demand for water and power.”
AZ Central reports that Meta is committed to integrate sustainability into the design campus' design.
“This will be one of the most water and energy-efficient data centers in the world,” Williams said. “Water is a concern and something we take very seriously.”
Meta has also promised to restore more water than its data center would use by investing in three water projects.
These projects aim to restore over 200 million gallons of water yearly in the Colorado River and Salt River basins.
