The Cochise County Library is offering a summer reading program at rural libraries across the county as part of a "Libraries Rock!" initiative.

The program, which will take place at the Bowie, Elfrida and Sunsites community libraries, will feature free events, books and prizes. 

Chocise County Library District Director Amadee Ricketts says the program can help children prevent any "slide" in skills over the summer months. 

“Reading during the summer months has been shown to prevent ‘summer slide’ and help school age children go back to school ready to learn,” Ricketts said in a statement. “Of course, reading is good for you at any age, and libraries offer summer programs to encourage people of all ages to read more and read more often." 

Activities at the Bowie Jimmie Libhart Library that are already underway include science, technology, engineering and math activities going on each day. 

The Elfrida Library will offer free, family-friendly programs focused on Arizona geology, star viewing parties and a hands-on music workshop now through July 20. The Elfrida Library also offers free summer lunches for those under 18.

From now through July 14, the Sunsites Community Library will feature summer reading camps for ages 3 and older along with presentations on geology, music and more.
