On June 24, the Kenton County Fiscal Court approved funding from its Community Redevelopment Fund for the City of Erlanger. This fund aims to support redevelopment projects in Kenton County cities that positively impact businesses and generate jobs. The fund, which totals $5 million, was established with help from the Kentucky General Assembly as part of the 2024 budget.

Erlanger will receive $1,305,000 to acquire and develop underperforming assets within its jurisdiction. The city is expected to contribute locally and has 36 months to utilize the funds. Any unused resources will be returned to the county.

Kenton County Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann stated: “Kenton County is committed to partnering with our cities so they can create spaces that attract residents, businesses and investment.” He added that they are eager to see how Erlanger will use these funds to create new community assets.

Erlanger Mayor Jessica Fette expressed gratitude for the state legislators making these funds available and highlighted the partnership with Kenton County. She said: “The process has been seamless... Our team has spent a great deal of time preparing for this moment, and it’s exciting to see that work paying off.”

In March, Kenton County enlisted the Catalytic Fund as an expert advisor on deploying the Community Redevelopment Fund. The Catalytic Fund will vet city funding proposals for maximum resident impact. CEO Jeanne Schroer noted: “As we conducted due diligence on behalf of the County, the City of Erlanger demonstrated a clear vision and readiness to act.”

This marks the second time Kenton County has used this fund; earlier in March, Independence received $900,000.

Cities must submit formal proposals through their mayor in consultation with their legislative body and demonstrate a 10% match for any awarded funding. Eligible projects focus on property development or right-of-way improvements enhancing quality of life by ensuring safety and accessibility.

Projects not meeting these criteria may be reviewed by Planning and Development Services of Kenton County’s Community Development Department for other potential funding opportunities.
