The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has announced a timeline for the construction of a new bridge to replace the KY 8 Licking River Bridge, aiming to improve safety and connectivity between Covington and Newport. The existing bridge will be demolished in Spring 2026, with the new structure expected to open by Summer 2028. The entire project is projected to conclude by Fall 2028.
Initially planned as a two-phase construction allowing pedestrian access, the decision was revised following consultations with citizens and city leaders. KYTC Chief District Engineer Bob Yeager stated that "the complete closure of the bridge crossing will ensure pedestrians and bicyclists are not located near an active work zone." This approach is also expected to reduce construction time by approximately one year.
During the closure, motorists will detour via the Girl Scout Bridge (KY 1120/11th Street), adding about five minutes to travel times. A shuttle service will operate for pedestrians and bicyclists from West Newport and East Covington neighborhoods throughout the bridge's closure period.
The shuttle service aims to provide essential connections for those without vehicles, ensuring access to daycare, employment, and groceries. It is being developed in collaboration with Covington and Newport cities, informed by studies on pedestrian usage patterns.
Selected in December 2023, the arch design for the new bridge includes separated shared-use paths offering views of Cincinnati’s skyline. These paths will integrate into local trail networks while complying with ADA standards. Additionally, traffic calming measures will be implemented on both sides of the bridge to enhance safety.
Yeager emphasized collaboration with city leadership "to ensure connectivity with current and future walking and bicycle paths." Updated weight limits on the new bridge will allow Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) buses to use it, enhancing public transit links.
Ongoing efforts involve refining design details and engaging community stakeholders in both cities. More information about shuttle services and other project aspects will be released in due course.
