Apple has announced a preview of watchOS 26, promising new features aimed at enhancing user experience through personalization and improved connectivity. The update introduces a design called Liquid Glass, which is said to enhance various functions such as the Smart Stack, Control Center, and in-app navigation. According to David Clark, Apple's senior director of watchOS Engineering, the new design "brings even more focus to content and makes using Apple Watch even more delightful."
The updated operating system includes Workout Buddy, an innovative fitness feature that uses Apple Intelligence to provide personalized motivation during workouts. It offers real-time feedback based on users' fitness data like heart rate and distance covered. Users can expect prompts like: “Way to get out for your run this Wednesday morning. You’re 18 minutes away from closing your Exercise ring.”
Additionally, watchOS 26 brings changes to everyday interactions with Smart Stack hints and updates to Messages. Notifications can now be managed using a one-handed wrist flick gesture. This feature utilizes sensors such as the accelerometer and gyroscope for ease of use when the other hand is occupied.
For communication enhancements, Live Translation in Messages allows texts to be translated into preferred languages directly on the Apple Watch. This will be available on specific models like Apple Watch Series 9 and above.
Further improvements include automatic speaker volume adjustments based on ambient noise levels and a redesigned Workout app layout. The Notes app also comes to Apple Watch with capabilities for creating and managing notes.
Developers are encouraged to utilize new APIs introduced in watchOS 26 for customizing controls and widgets within apps. A public beta of watchOS 26 will be available next month through Apple's Beta Software Program.
All these features are expected this fall as a free update for compatible Apple Watch models paired with iPhone devices running iOS 26.
