IBM and Inclusive Brains have announced a joint study to explore the integration of advanced AI and quantum machine learning techniques in brain-machine interfaces (BMIs). The collaboration aims to enhance the performance of BMIs, which can potentially help individuals with disabilities interact with digital environments without physical or vocal commands.

The initiative focuses on improving access to education and employment for people with paralysis. It also seeks broader societal benefits, such as better prevention of physical and mental health issues through improved understanding of brain activity patterns. Inclusive Brains will use insights from this study to develop multimodal AI systems that adapt in real-time to users' unique needs, enhancing their autonomy.

Inclusive Brains will leverage IBM's AI and quantum technologies to evaluate the accuracy of brain activity classification compared to existing models. This includes using IBM Granite foundation models to create benchmarks for testing various machine learning algorithms, automating the selection of effective algorithms for "mental commands," and studying quantum machine learning techniques.

The joint study aligns with principles of responsible technology, emphasizing ethical considerations in neurotechnology use. Béatrice Kosowski, President of IBM France, expressed pride in collaborating with innovative startups like Inclusive Brains, highlighting the potential benefits for healthcare.

Professor Olivier Oullier, CEO & Co-Founder of Inclusive Brains, noted that this partnership marks a shift from generic interfaces to bespoke solutions tailored to individual needs. Inclusive Brains is committed to developing cognitive agents that detect variations in stress, attention, cognitive load, and fatigue levels in real-time.

Inclusive Brains has achieved several milestones over the past year with its Prometheus BCI interface. These include showcasing a mind-controlled arm exoskeleton at the Olympic Torch Relay and engaging in mind-written communications with notable figures. The startup was named Startup of the Year in 2024 and received multiple accolades for its contributions to AI innovation.
