Apple has announced that the App Store ecosystem in the United States facilitated $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024. This figure comes from a study conducted by Professor Andrey Fradkin of Boston University Questrom School of Business and economist Dr. Jessica Burley from Analysis Group. A significant portion of these transactions, over 90 percent, did not require developers to pay any commission to Apple.
Over the past five years, the App Store ecosystem's size has grown significantly, tripling from $142 billion in 2019 to $406 billion last year. Earnings for U.S.-based developers have also more than doubled during this period. Small developers saw their earnings increase by 76 percent between 2021 and 2024.
Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, remarked on the growth: "For more than 15 years, the App Store has created incredible opportunity for app developers, entrepreneurs, and businesses of all sizes," he said. He added that Apple would continue investing in tools and resources to help developers reach new heights with their apps.
The study estimated that in 2024, the App Store ecosystem facilitated $277 billion from physical goods and services sales, $75 billion from in-app advertising, and $53 billion from digital goods and services. Growth was particularly noted in food delivery, entertainment, and enterprise apps.
Spending on physical goods and services has more than tripled since 2019. In contrast, spending on digital goods/services and advertising more than doubled. General retail spending and grocery delivery increased fourfold within this timeframe.
U.S. developers found success globally through listings on storefronts across 175 countries/regions. Many U.S.-developed apps appeared on most-downloaded charts outside the U.S., ranking among the Top 5 most-downloaded apps in many regions.
Apple's rigorous review process helped maintain a safe marketplace by preventing over $9 billion in fraudulent transactions over five years while rejecting nearly two million app submissions last year for failing security standards.
To support developers further, Apple continues investing in features like App Store Connect enhancements and new tools such as Accessibility Nutrition Labels coming later this year.
Initiatives like the App Store Small Business Program aim to propel small developer innovations forward; one example is Slopes—a winter sports app initially launched as a passion project now used by millions worldwide—utilizing various Apple technologies including HealthKit & ARKit alongside expansion onto devices like Apple Watch
Through programs such as Meet with Apple or facilities at Cupertino Developer Center offering numerous APIs/frameworks (e.g., SwiftUI), along with educational initiatives like Detroit’s Developer Academy established collaboratively between Michigan State University/Apple itself aiming towards foundational skills-building within coding/design marketing disciplines—more than a thousand students have been trained since its inception alone
In addition—over nine hundred participants joined intensive courses under Henry Ford College Foundation Program learning core principles behind successful app development careers thanks largely due strong support network provided directly via partnership efforts spearheaded throughout wider community settings nationally overall thus far today
