Instagram introduced Teen Accounts last year, aiming to better safeguard teenage users and provide parents with assurance regarding their children’s online interactions. This feature incorporates built-in protections that monitor communication with teens, regulate content exposure, and manage screen time. Users under 16 require parental approval for modifications.

Since its inception, at least 54 million Teen Accounts have been activated globally, with 97% of users aged 13-15 choosing to maintain these settings. This experience has also been extended to Facebook and Messenger.

Current feedback from both parents and teens indicates satisfaction with the revamped system. "Over 90% of parents surveyed say the new Teen Account protections are helpful in supporting their teens on Instagram," the company states, acknowledging parental concerns over internet exposure for teenagers.

Today, Instagram initiated notifications to inform parents about the significance of teenagers providing accurate age information online. Collaborating with experts, such as pediatric psychologist Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart, the company offers guidance to help parents discuss age verification with their teens.

To expand Teen Account protections further, Instagram is testing AI technology in the US. This AI aims to detect suspected teen users and automatically apply suitable settings, even if incorrect birthdates are provided. The company acknowledges potential inaccuracies, offering users the option to adjust their settings if necessary.

Instagram recognizes that as the digital landscape evolves, so must its protective strategies. "The digital world continues to evolve and we have to evolve with it. That’s why it’s important that we work together with parents," the company notes. They emphasize the critical role of parental involvement and age verification for ensuring appropriate online experiences for teens.
