John Deere has introduced a new perception system designed to bring autonomy to tillage work. This development is part of an upgrade kit for specific tractor models, allowing for autonomous operation in agricultural tasks. The system is compatible with model year 2022 and newer 9R and 9RX tractors, as well as model year 2020.5 and newer 8R and 8RX tractors. Additionally, certain model year 2025 John Deere tractors are equipped with factory-installed autonomy features.

Christopher Murray, the go-to-market manager for embedded technology at John Deere, highlighted the benefits of this innovation: "We have been working with test customers for five years to bring an autonomous solution to the market," he said. He noted that autonomy allows farmers to extend their working hours and allocate labor more efficiently during peak periods.

The perception system includes a set of 16 cameras mounted on the tractor cab roof, providing a comprehensive view around both the tractor and its tillage tool. For those seeking to enhance their existing equipment, precision upgrade kits are available for John Deere tillage implements from model year 2017 onwards. These kits include additional lighting, a StarFire receiver mast, and necessary harnessing.

John Deere's approach integrates this new autonomy solution with current precision agriculture technologies such as AutoPath, AutoTrac Turn Automation, and the John Deere Operations Center Mobile. According to Murray: "Customer feedback has lauded the value of this technology," emphasizing how it extends workdays without increasing labor hours.

Farmers interested in exploring these autonomous capabilities can contact local John Deere dealers for availability or demonstrations expected by fall 2025. Further details about John Deere's advancements in autonomy can be found at deere.com/autonomy.
