Covington is seeking public input on how to allocate approximately $3.5 million in federal funds expected this year for two grant programs aimed at supporting neighborhoods. The funds, distributed through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME programs, are intended for projects like affordable housing and public infrastructure improvements.
To gather feedback, the city has launched an online survey and will host a public hearing on February 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hellman Creative Center. John Hammons, Covington's CDBG/HOME Program Coordinator, emphasized the importance of public input, stating, "This is the public’s opportunity to provide much-needed information and viewpoints."
The allocations are projected to be around $1.8 million for CDBG and $1.7 million for HOME funds. The CDBG program supports services in low- and moderate-income areas such as infrastructure improvements, crime prevention, economic development, and housing rehabilitation. The HOME program focuses on creating affordable housing opportunities through initiatives like down payment assistance.
Final spending decisions will be compiled into an Annual Action Plan. Once a draft plan is created, there will be another comment period before it is submitted to HUD for approval.
