Covington residents who own guns can now obtain free cable-style gun locks, a program initiated by the Covington Human Rights Commission with support from the local police department. These locks are designed to prevent firearms from being loaded or fired accidentally by threading a cable through the action or barrel of a gun. The initiative aims to promote safer storage practices among gun owners in the area.
The locks are available at Covington Police Headquarters located at 1 Police Memorial Drive. Residents can pick them up from the front lobby window between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Proof of residency is required, but firearms should not be brought to the station. Capt. Justin Bradbury emphasized, “DO NOT bring your weapon to the police department as doing so is a safety risk to everyone.” He also noted that officers would not assist in placing the lock on the firearm.
Currently, about 80 locks are available for distribution. To aid in proper usage, the Community Liaison Unit has produced an instructional video featuring Sgt. Rachel White, which is accessible online.
Mike Steinman, vice chairman of the Covington Human Rights Commission, highlighted the importance of this program in preventing accidental and intentional injuries or deaths involving guns. “Too many persons have fallen victim to being shot,” Steinman stated. He expressed hope that these locks would help reduce gun violence and accidental shootings, especially protecting children and neighbors.
Capt. Bradbury affirmed that providing these locks aligns with their goal of reducing avoidable gun-related incidents: “We look forward to getting these free gun locks in the hands of as many Covington gun owners as we can,” he said, adding that saving even one life would make their efforts worthwhile.
