California property insurers are stepping in to support their customers affected by the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) has stated that these insurers are providing financial assistance, acting as first responders to help with recovery efforts.

The support includes additional living expenses (ALE) coverage for policyholders who have been displaced. Coverage for property and vehicle losses will be provided according to the limits of each insurance policy. California regulations mandate that insurers must pay at least one-third of the estimated value of personal belongings and a minimum of four months' rent for local residents immediately.

Triple-I has outlined what is typically covered under standard policies held by Californians:

- Homeowners, condo, and renters insurance policies cover damage caused by fire and smoke.

- These policies also offer ALE, or Loss of Use, for those forced to evacuate or whose homes are uninhabitable due to wildfire damage.

- Water damage from firefighting efforts is included under these policies.

- Auto insurance with optional comprehensive coverage protects vehicles from fire and wind damage. About 75% of U.S. drivers choose this coverage.

For filing claims, Triple-I advises contacting your insurer promptly, understanding claim requirements and deadlines, documenting damages with photos if safe, retaining damaged items until assessed by an adjuster, and keeping receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses like temporary lodging.

Reporters covering the wildfires can reach out to Triple-I's California-based experts for interviews on various coverage issues and claim-filing advice.
