AAA anticipates a record number of holiday travelers this year, with 119.3 million people expected to travel 50 miles or more from home between December 21 and January 1. This projection slightly surpasses the previous record set in 2019 by 64,000 travelers. According to AAA, this year's numbers are bolstered by Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday, which is expected to lead to increased travel both before and after the holiday.

Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, stated, "This is the time of year when lifelong memories are made with loved ones, and travel plays a big role in that."

Most travelers will be driving to their destinations, with nearly 90% opting for car travel. While this represents an increase of 2.5 million from last year, it remains below the 2019 record of 108 million drivers. Lower gas prices compared to last year are contributing to the popularity of road trips.

Air travel is also expected to reach new heights with 7.85 million passengers projected this season. Flights have become more expensive than last year, with domestic tickets averaging $830 and international flights costing around $1,630.

Other modes of transportation such as buses, trains, and cruises are seeing an increase as well. AAA predicts that 4.47 million people will use these options—a figure not seen in two decades—with domestic cruise bookings up by 37%.

AAA has provided several safety tips for those traveling by car during this busy period. Drivers are advised to adhere to speed limits and avoid driving when tired or under the influence of substances that could impair alertness.

Traffic delays are anticipated in major metropolitan areas over the weekends preceding Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Bob Pishue from INRIX suggests avoiding peak commuting hours: "With a near record number of auto travelers expected this holiday season...leave bright and early or after the evening commute."

Popular destinations for holiday travelers include tropical locations like Orlando and Miami domestically, while internationally Punta Cana and Cancun top the list.

The forecast methodology developed by AAA in collaboration with S&P Global Market Intelligence uses various economic indicators to predict travel volumes accurately.

AAA has been advocating for safe mobility since its inception in 1902 and continues to offer services such as roadside assistance and vacation planning for its members across North America.
