The Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) Board of Education has officially appointed Shauna Murphy as the district's permanent superintendent. This decision was made during the board's regular business meeting on Monday.
Murphy brings over 35 years of educational experience to her new role, having previously served as CPS' chief of student, family and community engagement, and interim superintendent. Her career is marked by a focus on improving academic outcomes, optimizing resources, balancing budgets, and building collaborative relationships with students, staff, unions, and community stakeholders.
Eve Bolton, president of the CPS Board of Education, expressed confidence in Murphy's leadership: "The board is confident in Shauna Murphy and Dr. Alesia Smith’s ability to lead CPS during this critical time. Their strong leadership and shared commitment to equity and excellence will ensure the District stays on course. With their deep knowledge of CPS and dedication to our students, staff and community, we know the District is in capable hands as we move forward."
Since joining CPS in 1999, Murphy has held various positions including elementary and high school principal and assistant superintendent. In her role as chief of student, family and community engagement, she strengthened ties with community partners and expanded parent organizations while advancing career pathways in high schools to boost graduation rates.
Murphy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University in broadcast journalism along with a Master of Education from Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati. She also obtained her superintendent licensure from the University of Dayton.
“It is a privilege to serve as superintendent and to collaborate with our committed educators, staff and community,” said Murphy. “Together, we will remain focused on fostering academic success by creating a supportive environment that uplifts our educators and motivates our students to reach their highest potential.”
In addition to Murphy's appointment, Dr. Alesia Smith has been named deputy superintendent after serving as chief of schools. Dr. Smith's career spans over three decades within education starting from an assistant principal position at a CPS elementary school before moving into roles such as principal coach and turnaround specialist at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Smith has been recognized for implementing innovative instructional strategies that have driven significant academic growth across all CPS schools based on results from the 2023 Ohio State Test.
