Flying Food Group (FFG) has been at the forefront of sustainable practices within the aviation catering industry. Through the company’s sustainability initiative, Greener Runways, their efforts in 2023 mark significant strides toward a greener future. With a focus on reducing organic waste, implementing recycling trials, and upgrading their vehicle fleet, FFG is demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Organic Waste Management with ORCA Digesters

One of FFG's top sustainability initiatives involves the use of Organic Digesters, particularly the Organic Refuse Conversion Alternative (ORCA) Digesters, which efficiently break down organic waste using enzymes, converting it into water that can be safely reintroduced into the water stream. Initially implemented in select locations such as IAD, SFO, LAI, and LAV, Flying Food expanded its deployment to include MIA in 2023, with plans for further expansion.

ORCA Digesters have proven to be highly effective in diverting food waste from landfills. Even the smallest model, capable of digesting 15 pounds of food waste per hour, can divert a remarkable 65.7 tons of food waste annually. With the potential for organizations to divert an average of 416,100 pounds of food waste per year per location, the environmental benefits are substantial, including reduced methane generation, conserved water resources, and decreased carbon emissions equivalent to removing cars from the road and powering homes with electricity.

While awaiting the official data for 2023, FFG remains optimistic about the positive impact their Organic Digesters continue to have on waste diversion and environmental conservation.

Recycling Trials and Advocacy Efforts

In collaboration with airlines and industry partners, FFG actively participates in recycling trials initiated by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). These trials aimed to challenge regulations, such as those enforced by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), that restrict the recycling of materials classified as international waste. At FFG's Newark, New Jersey location, a partnership with SWISS Airlines saw employees and flight staff collecting and segregating recyclable materials, including glass, aluminum, and plastic.

Although the materials collected during these trials were initially disposed of according to APHIS regulations, the persistence and impact of these initiatives led to a significant development in 2024. APHIS granted approval for continued recycling efforts, allowing SWISS Airlines and FFG to implement sustainable waste management practices at the Newark location. The data gathered from these trials not only demonstrates the feasibility of recycling in aviation catering but also contributes to advocacy efforts aimed at reforming international waste regulations.

Eco-Friendly Vehicle Fleet Upgrades

In recognizing the importance of reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency wherever possible, FFG started a vehicle fleet upgrade project in 2021. With a focus on replacing older vehicles with eco-friendly alternatives, FFG has introduced hybrid minivans and low-emission Ford gas catering trucks into its support fleet.

By replacing outdated vehicles with hybrid models and low-emission trucks, FFG aims to minimize its carbon footprint and contribute to cleaner air quality in the communities it serves. With 11 hybrid minivans already in operation and additional deliveries scheduled for 2024, along with the introduction of low-emission catering trucks, FFG continues to prioritize sustainability in its operational practices.

FFG prioritizes sustainability to strengthen its operations, while benefiting the planet and its surrounding communities. With verified objectives and reporting, the company ensures the quality and integrity of its meals while reducing environmental impact. The Greener Runways sustainability program spans its facilities and extends to key suppliers, guided by internal expertise and third-party collaboration. Through the program, their initiative promotes sustainable practices company-wide, engaging employees, empowering suppliers, and supporting communities.
