The Philadelphia Union, a Major League Soccer team, announced March 14 that it has agreed on a multi-year deal with Green Mountain Energy, which will power Subaru Park Stadium, Union Power Plant, and the Union’s practice facility.

This is the first professional soccer sponsorship for GME, which is the country’s longest serving renewable energy provider, according to a press release published on the team website.  Philadelphia Union and GME will work to enhance sustainability at Subaru Park, which is where the Union play their home games.

Green Mountain Energy will also host activations on the plaza and parking lots near the stadium on gamedays, as well as at youth tournaments throughout the year, the release stated.

“We are excited to welcome Green Mountain Energy to the Philadelphia Union family,” said Charlie Slonaker, chief revenue officer at the Philadelphia Union. “Our partnership with GME further solidifies our commitment to sustainability and to making our area a better place for our fans and community.”

Since 1997, GME has been focused on changing the way power is made by only offering products that have an environmental benefit and operate with a zero-carbon footprint, according to the release. The company offers consumers and businesses cleaner electricity products that come from renewable sources. It also offers various carbon offset products and sustainable solutions for businesses.

“We believe in solutions that not only benefit the planet, but also benefit the people in our local communities,” said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager of Green Mountain. “We are grateful for the opportunity to join forces with the Philadelphia Union to advance sustainability.”

The renewable energy provider’s work has led to a nearly 100-billion-pound reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of planting more than 11 million trees, the release stated.
