The number of youths in foster care in Arizona at the end of fiscal year 2018 stood at 13,360, an 11.1 percent decrease over the previous fiscal year, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Arizona children in foster care in fiscal year 2012 numbered 13,461. Five years later, the number of children was 15,031, representing an 11.7 percent increase in the foster care population, the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) reported.
Nationwide, the number in foster care decreased in FY 2018 for the first time since 2011, the analysis found. It went from 441,000 at the end of FY 2017 to 437,300 a year later.
But the number of U.S. children in foster care increased 11.3 percent between fiscal years 2012 and 2017. By the end of FY 2018, the number in foster care had dipped by 0.9 percent compared to the previous year, according to the analysis.
