City of Avondale issued the following announcement on April 23.

The City of Avondale, in partnership with the Avondale Municipal Art Committee is pleased to announce the winners of this year's Achieving Artists Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers Scholarship Art Contest, which took place on Thursday, April 18th.

The contest provided $5,000 in scholarship monies to the winners to further their education. First place winner was Fayth Arvizu, for her painting titled “Fractured Ties”. Wendy Rocha, took second place with her digital media piece titled “Community“, while third place went to Guadalupe Osuna, for her drawing, “Flying Low.” All of this year's honorees are seniors attending La Joya High School.

Now in its 8th year, the Achieving Artists Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers Scholarship Art Contest was open to all high school age graduating seniors in Avondale who are planning on enrolling into college. Artwork was submitted in the media of paintings, drawings, mix/digital media, photography and sculptures, with a total of 31 entries. This year's contest was well represented by aspiring artists from the following Avondale high schools -- Agua Fria, La Joya, and Westview.

The contest was judged by community artists Joshua Levario, Anthony Velasquez, and Jim Painter. Participants, parents and teachers were recognized for their efforts during the reception. Artwork of all contest entries will be on display until May 1st at the Estrella Mountain Community College Performing Arts Center, 3000 North Dysart Road, Avondale.
