The Flagstaff community will help commemorate the historical end to slavery in the U.S. at an upcoming Juneteenth celebration.

The Coconino County African American Advisory Council along with the Southside Community Association will host the Juneteeth event, which will feature live special entertainment, food trucks and activities for the whole family.

The event, which according to juneteenth.com, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration marking the end of slavery, will be held on June 19 at the Murdoch Community Center on West Brannen Avenue in Flagstaff.

Juneteenth has become an important event to remember the freedom of African Americans while highlighting education and achievement. According to juneteenth.com, the event's origins can be traced back to Galveston, Texas in 1985 when celebrated as African American Emancipation Day.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the country with special events that are designed to educate about the period of slavery which took place in our country's history. The Juneteenth events are also designed to bring people of all races, nationalities and religions together to learn about how slavery shaped and continues to shape our society even today, according to juneteenth.com.
