Following the Copley fire this month, Coconino County officials are encouraging residents to sign up for an emergency notification system through the county’s website.
According to Coconino County Emergency Management Director Todd Whitney, the system will be the best way to ensure the safety of residents during a wildfire or other emergency. The emergency system will send calls, emails, or text alerts directly to those who have signed up via www.coconino.az.gov/ready.
Reports from the Summit Fire Department said that the Copley fire began April 8 due to illegal burning around the area of North Copley Drive, east of Flagstaff. More than 80 acres, including several structures, were destroyed and about 75 residents were affected by the fire.
In addition to the emergency notification system, Coconino residents are encouraged to comply with the “Ready, Set, Go!” program, which involves cleaning gutters and yards and creating of a defensible space around a home's vegetation and grass.
As per the National Weather Service, burning is not allowed -- especially on Red Flag Days. Residents are also advised to pay attention to weather warnings and contact their local fire district to secure burn permits.
