The first AZ Creative Communities Institute (AZCCI), a one-year fellowship offering training and support for integrating creativity into community life, has chosen Tucson’s Barrio Anita and eight other Arizona localities as its participants.

AZCCI was developed in cooperation with the Arizona Commission on the Arts, Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and Southwest Folklife Alliance, according to an announcement.

The program will deliver hands-on training and offer networking opportunities for participants to discover how to harness inventiveness and inspiration for generating “positive community impact” with tangible results. Barrio Anita representatives will join colleagues from around the state.

Teams from each jurisdiction — elected officials, civic leaders and business stakeholders — will help allocate between $15,000 and $20,000 in grants, artistic services and support.

Tucson’s Vice Mayor Regina Romero of Ward 1 assisted with the area’s application for AZCCI.

The neighborhood joins Casa Grande, Douglas, Eastlake (Phoenix), Flagstaff, Globe, South Phoenix, Tempe and Yuma as the finalists chosen out of 22 applicants, according to the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
