Salt River Project will pay to plant 100 ponderosa pine trees for every touchdown the Arizona Cardinals score this football season through SRP's Trees for Touchdowns campaign.

In the past six years, more than 1.3 million acres of forests have been lost to wildfires. SRP, its customers and the National Forest Foundation have already planted nearly 1 million trees spread over 2,500 acres of forest land through the Trees for Change program.

Trees for Change is funded by SRP customers that pledge an extra $3 or more on each monthly bill. SRP matches the donated money dollar for dollar, up to $200,000 annually, with all of the funds used to help sustain healthy forests and safeguard the Valley's watershed.

More than 2,300 customers have joined the Trees for Change program so far. Customers who sign up for the program by the end of the year will have a chance to win autographed Cardinals gear.

Last year, the Cardinals scored a franchise record 59 touchdowns, resulting 5,900 trees planted.

"Hundreds of thousands of ponderosa pine seedlings have been planted through this program, and we thank the Cardinals for their partnership to help us plant thousands more," Lori Singleton, director of customer programs and operations support, said. "Their efforts and our customer contributions will help restore and protect the watershed that provides water for Valley residents."
