FRANKFORT, Ky. – Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems (SEWS) plans to expand its facility in Simpson County with a $17 million investment, creating 76 new full-time jobs. Governor Andy Beshear emphasized the significance of this development for Kentucky's manufacturing sector.
“Kentucky’s manufacturing industry has long been a key economic driver for this state, and the momentum we have seen within this sector in recent years shows no sign of slowing,” said Gov. Beshear. He expressed gratitude towards Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems for their continued trust in Kentucky's workforce and resources.
The expansion will enhance SEWS's production capabilities, specifically electric wiring harness components for automobiles. New equipment including injection-molding machines and automated assembly tools will be added to produce electrical connectors. This growth will also introduce new opportunities in various sectors such as manufacturing, warehousing, maintenance, and engineering.
John Saylors, division manager of SEWS, shared his excitement about expanding operations in South Central Kentucky: “We have been producing connectors and terminals in Kentucky since 1988; it’s very exciting to be able to continue to grow and expand in South Central Kentucky.”
Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd., founded in 1897, has evolved through innovative R&D activities based on its manufacturing technologies for electric wire and power cables. Today, there are over 350 consolidated companies worldwide under the Sumitomo Electric Group umbrella.
Simpson County Judge/Executive Mason Barnes welcomed the expansion: “We are extremely excited that Sumitomo plans to do an expansion of their operations here in Simpson County.”
Franklin Mayor Larry Dixon noted the positive impact on the community: “This expansion by Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems is incredible news for the Franklin community.”
Jim DeCesare from the Franklin-Simpson Industrial Authority expressed enthusiasm for SEWS's investment: “We are thrilled to welcome Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems’ expansion to Franklin."
The investment aligns with a period of significant economic growth under Governor Beshear’s administration. Since taking office, more than $36 billion has been announced in private-sector investments leading to over 62,000 jobs created.
In June, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved a 10-year incentive agreement with SEWS under the Kentucky Business Investment program. The performance-based agreement can provide up to $850,000 in tax incentives based on specific targets being met by SEWS over ten years.
