OhioHealth's Vice President of Neurosciences, Dr. B.J. Hicks, has been recognized as the National Physician of the Year by the American Heart Association (AHA). This marks the first time an OhioHealth physician has received this prestigious national award.

Dr. Hicks expressed his surprise at receiving the honor: “It was a shock and still is.” He emphasized that those dedicated to stroke care and neuroscience do so not for recognition but because "it's the right thing for the people you take care of."

Dr. Hicks has actively lobbied for public health policies such as a flavored tobacco ban and advocated for equitable health priorities in city council discussions. He is also known for developing Columbus’s first mobile stroke treatment unit, which dispatches specialized medical services alongside emergency responders when someone exhibits stroke symptoms. These units deliver critical therapies within 60 minutes after symptoms begin, known as the golden hour.

Reflecting on his achievements, Dr. Hicks said, “To be recognized that a dream was fulfilled and not deferred, that was special.” He emphasized focusing on patient needs over minor disagreements in healthcare processes.

In collaboration with AHA, Dr. Hicks initiated and led the Franklin County Hypertension Network to support evidence-based strategies for improving blood pressure control rates. His involvement with AHA includes serving on the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee and chairing its acute treatment subcommittee.

Dr. Hicks became vice president of OhioHealth’s Neuroscience service line in 2023, where he oversees clinical strategy development for their Neuroscience program. Since joining OhioHealth in 2012 as a vascular neurology specialist, he has co-directed the Comprehensive Stroke Program since 2017 and served as president of OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital's medical staff since 2022.

“I am passionate about serving our neuroscience patients,” said Dr. Hicks, highlighting his commitment to delivering quality care to central Ohio communities with his team.
