Threads, a social app by Meta, is marking its second anniversary with new features aimed at enhancing user interaction and conversation. The platform has grown significantly since its launch, developing a distinct user base separate from Instagram. Over one-third of daily Threads users follow different accounts than they do on Instagram.

To further foster open dialogue and community building, Threads is introducing two updates: direct messaging within the app and the Threads highlighter. These features are designed to facilitate deeper connections and highlight engaging content.

Messaging has been highly requested by users who wish to continue conversations privately. This feature will allow direct messages between followers on Threads or mutual followers from Instagram who are 18 years or older. "We know it’s important for people to feel safe using messaging," states the announcement, emphasizing that robust privacy standards and safety measures are in place.

Future enhancements to messaging will include message controls, group messaging capabilities, and inbox filters. These tools aim to make it easier for users to manage their communications effectively.

The introduction of the Threads highlighter aims to spotlight unique perspectives that can spark thoughtful discussions. Initially visible in key areas of the app where content is discovered, this feature will also mark trending topics with plans for broader implementation soon.

As Threads moves into its third year, the focus remains on supporting communities and creators while maintaining an environment conducive to vibrant conversations.
