OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, recognized as the busiest adult Level I Trauma Center in Ohio, is undergoing a major expansion to meet the demands of central Ohio's growing population. The development includes a seven-story, 270,000-square-foot inpatient building, a new trauma center, and an emergency department.

The construction presents unique challenges due to limited space. "We're building in a closet. We have neighbors five feet away from our property line," said Jean Halpin, president of Grant Medical Center, to Business First reporter Carrie Ghose. Despite these constraints, Halpin emphasized that patient care remains paramount: "There's no 'slow time'. We put the patient at the center, always, and we can't close."

Messer Construction Company is leading the project with senior project executive Andy Hoh overseeing operations. The team has innovatively integrated their construction crane into the building's foundation. Once construction reaches its peak height, the crane will be dismantled and removed.

To minimize disruption to nearby businesses during construction, Messer opted for quieter saw blades. Additionally, they are maximizing available space by incorporating a 28-foot basement for underground parking.
