Kenton County has appointed Kelly Sauer as the new director of Kenton County Animal Services (KCAS) as of May 5. Sauer, who hails from the Cincinnati area, brings over ten years of experience in animal welfare and is committed to fostering a compassionate community for both people and pets.

In her new role, Sauer will manage shelter operations, field services, and community engagement initiatives. Her leadership aims to support KCAS's mission of providing compassionate care, enforcing animal laws, and promoting responsible pet ownership across Kenton County.

Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann expressed optimism about Sauer's appointment: “Since taking office, I’ve seen incredible transformations at our animal shelter... I look forward to seeing Kelly further elevate our team’s efforts and serve the residents of Kenton County.”

Sauer graduated from the University of Cincinnati and has been an advocate for the no-kill movement throughout her career. She previously worked as a community support manager for Cincinnati Animal CARE. In that position, she focused on empowering residents to care for their pets through strong community partnerships and essential resources. Her approach emphasizes keeping pets with their families by offering support rather than encouraging surrender.

Sauer takes over from Interim Director Taylor Jackson, who returns to her previous role as sergeant of Kenton County Animal Control. Jackson's leadership during the transition period was noted for maintaining continuity and service excellence.
