Armonk and New York, May 1, 2025 – IBM and the EY organization have announced the introduction of EY.ai for tax, utilizing IBM watsonx. This development marks a continuation of their longstanding partnership, focusing on artificial intelligence solutions to tackle challenges in tax departments.
EY.ai for tax, supported by IBM watsonx, aims to automate tax compliance and streamline global data management using open-source AI models, such as IBM Granite. This initiative seeks to mitigate resource constraints, manage diverse enterprise resource planning systems, address talent shortages, and navigate complex regulations through new generative AI solutions.
Martin Fiore, EY Americas Deputy Vice Chair – Tax, emphasized the fusion of tax expertise with emerging technologies: “Our professionals are extending beyond world-class tax technical knowledge and combining their experience with emerging technologies that can produce highly effective outcomes for our clients.”
Three AI-enabled tax solutions were highlighted:
- Intelligent Tax Data Lake utilizes IBM watsonx.data and watsonx.ai to consolidate transaction data for tax filings. The solution's built-in controls facilitate data reconciliation from 36 sources within IBM's tax department.
- Detect and Correct with Business Documents harnesses watsonx.ai and IBM Research’s toolkit Docling to extract data from invoices, enabling comparison and correction of ERP data.
- Withholding Tax Determinations automates the determination of withholding tax rates for transactions using watsonx.ai.
The AI solutions are in use by IBM’s Tax Department, automating time-intensive tasks and potentially saving tens of thousands of hours annually. IBM maintains a focus on security and trust to safeguard sensitive tax data.
Kanthi Morrissey, IBM Vice President and Chief Tax Officer, noted, “By combining EY domain expertise in tax and IBM’s AI technology, we were able to transform the way our tax department handles global tax compliance, freeing up the team to focus on more strategic work.”
IBM and EY are working to enhance these solutions and expand their application to other tax processes. Further details can be accessed at the EY website.
