Last month's Covington Recycles & Book Donation event, hosted at Blair Tech's Tech Castle in Latonia, successfully collected an estimated 4,500 pounds of electronic waste from over 150 cars. Residents brought in items such as laptops, desktops, televisions, and cell phones.
Laura Blair, Blair Tech's marketing director, remarked, “We were blown away by the community’s response to this event,” adding that it demonstrated Covington residents' commitment to sustainability when given a chance.
The event marked the start of a partnership that now allows Covington residents to recycle electronics year-round. Blair stated, “Making it easy and convenient to drop off old devices not only keeps harmful materials out of our landfills, but also gives us the chance to reuse and renew tech in ways that directly benefit others.”
The event was supported by the City of Covington, Keep Covington Beautiful, The Center for Great Neighborhoods, and Tech Castle. Aaron Sparks from Covington’s Public Works, Solid Waste and Recycling said, “Diverting over two tons of material from the landfill for further use means a difference was made.”
Blair highlighted the ongoing efforts, saying, the parts collected could be transformed into items like a renewed laptop for a college student or computers for a classroom.
In addition to electronics, the event, in partnership with Read Ready Covington, also gathered gently used books to fill Little Free Libraries throughout the city, including a new library at Tech Castle.
