Abbott has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Epic to integrate data from its FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems directly into Epic's electronic health record systems in the United States. This partnership aims to streamline access to CGM data for healthcare providers, improving efficiency and patient care.
Lisa Earnhardt, executive vice president and group president of medical devices for Abbott, stated, "Our goal is to simplify care and drive better outcomes for both providers and patients." She noted that while this is the first integration of Libre data into Epic, Abbott plans to expand this model to other medical devices and connected care platforms in the future.
This integration will allow data from a user's LibreView account to automatically link with Epic, enabling clinicians to view their patients' glucose data effortlessly. Alan Hutchison, vice president at Epic, commented, "Our work with Abbott aims to make life simpler for the nearly 40 million people in the U.S. who live with diabetes today."
The collaboration will provide more than 575,000 healthcare providers serving 2.8 million patients access to vital glucose data in patient charts. This aims to help providers concentrate more on care management rather than searching for data.
Abbott has been a leader in diabetes care for the past decade with its FreeStyle Libre systems, used by over 7 million people across 60 countries. The company emphasizes real-time glucose monitoring to help users understand the impact of food, activity, or insulin on their glucose levels.
"For updates on this integration, healthcare providers, and health system administrations can contact Abbott's diabetes care business at Libre.Epic@abbott.com."
Abbott continues to be a leading global healthcare entity across various sectors, while Epic remains a major player in healthcare software, aiming to reduce administrative barriers to enhance patient care.
