IBM has announced new advancements in their managed detection and response service offerings, introducing agentic and automation capabilities aimed at bolstering autonomous security operations. The company unveiled the Autonomous Threat Operations Machine (ATOM), designed to facilitate autonomous threat triage, investigation, and remediation, all with minimal human interaction. Coupled with this is the new X-Force Predictive Threat Intelligence (PTI) agent, which employs AI models specific to industry verticals to predict potential threats, reducing the need for manual threat hunting.
Mark Hughes, Global Managing Partner for Cybersecurity Services at IBM, emphasized the increasing challenges organizations face from cyber threats that delay detection and response times. Hughes stated, "By delivering agentic AI capabilities, IBM is automating threat hunting to help improve detection and response processes so clients can unlock new value from security operations and free up already scarce security resources."
ATOM is integrated into IBM's Threat Detection and Response services and utilizes an AI agentic framework to improve threat detection. It accelerates alert analysis, performs risk assessments, develops and executes investigation plans, and enacts remediation procedures, allowing security teams to prioritize essential threats over less severe risks.
As a global systems integrator and managed security services provider, IBM Consulting assists clients in managing security operations center outcomes, including AI-based orchestration for threat detection. ATOM functions as a digital operator that is compatible with solutions from IBM and other partners such as Google Cloud and Microsoft.
The PTI agent combines AI with expert human analysis to generate proactive threat intelligence. It integrates data from more than a hundred sources, including IBM's X-Force Threat Intelligence and various automated feeds, synthesizing this information into comprehensive intelligence reports that offer tailored threat-hunting recommendations.
IBM highlighted their presence at the RSAC 2025 Conference in San Francisco, where attendees can engage with their presentations and exhibits at the Moscone Center.
