AES Ohio is set to commemorate National Lineworker Appreciation Day on April 18, a day dedicated to acknowledging the contributions of lineworkers in ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to communities. The company, employing 130 lineworkers and line technicians, oversees more than 17,000 miles of transmission, distribution, and underground electrical lines.
As National Lineworker Appreciation Day approaches, AES Ohio aims to celebrate the efforts of those who power homes and businesses in West Central Ohio. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the lineworkers and technicians at AES Ohio form part of the nearly 120,000 lineworkers who maintain the safety and functionality of the U.S. electric grid. This recognition underscores the commitment, ingenuity, and hard work of America's electrical line workforce.
The team's responsibilities are not without challenges, as lineworkers contend with harsh weather conditions and emergencies. Recently, AES Ohio tackled a series of severe weather incidents, including tornadoes that inflicted significant damage to electrical infrastructure. In addressing these challenges, AES Ohio utilizes Smart Meter technology to remotely monitor power status, enhancing efficiency and reducing operational costs.
“This is an excellent opportunity to recognize line workers and express our gratitude for their service,” said Chad Bocook, Director of AES Ohio T&D Field Operations. He added that the lineworkers persistently maintain the electrical system throughout the year, navigating storms and emergencies to provide customers in West Central Ohio with safe and reliable power.
Becoming a lineworker involves a four-year apprenticeship that demands 8,119 hours of both practical field training and theoretical classroom learning. AES Ohio emphasizes safety through its Safety 101 program, which conducts over 30 demonstrations annually to educate diverse audiences about electricity safety and its potential hazards.
Since 2008, AES Ohio has received 16 awards from the Edison Electric Institute, acknowledging its leadership and service in emergency recovery, mutual assistance, and safety performance.
AES Ohio encourages the public to express their appreciation to lineworkers by using the hashtag #ThankALineworker on social media, thereby recognizing the vital work of those ensuring power supply to communities.
