Uber has introduced a new self-identification feature for service animal handlers, aimed at enhancing accessibility and reducing ride refusals. The announcement was made on the company's website on February 3.

According to the press release, this feature allows riders with service animals to indicate their status within the Uber app and automatically notify drivers upon arrival. This update seeks to eliminate the need for riders to manually message drivers in advance, thereby improving communication between riders and drivers. Riders can enable this feature by completing an eligibility form in the app, with the option to update or opt out of self-identification at any time.

A survey conducted by Guide Dogs for the Blind revealed that 83% of respondents who use guide dogs had experienced at least one rideshare denial due to their service animal. The survey underscored that these denials resulted in negative consequences such as travel delays, financial burdens from increased transportation costs, and emotional distress. Furthermore, some riders faced multiple refusals within a short period, affecting their ability to rely on rideshare services for daily mobility.

According to its website, Uber Technologies Inc., founded in 2009 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, is a global transportation and technology company operating in over 70 countries. It offers services including ridesharing, food delivery through Uber Eats, and freight logistics. The company's platform connects millions of riders and drivers daily using real-time data and automation to facilitate transportation and delivery services.
