Volunteers are being called upon to participate in a tree-planting event scheduled for Saturday morning in Peaselburg, Covington, Kentucky. The Covington Urban Forestry Board, in collaboration with the City's Forestry Division, aims to plant at least 52 trees along Russell Street and W. 20th Street as part of their biannual community initiative.
Participants are asked to gather at Glenn O. Swing Elementary School's parking lot at 501 W. 19th St., just before 9 a.m. The planting will continue until noon or until all trees have been planted. Volunteers are encouraged to wear boots or sturdy shoes and clothes suitable for getting dirty. They should also bring gloves and shovels if available, although some will be provided on-site. Refreshments will be offered by Keep Covington Beautiful.
Covington Urban Forester Patrick Moore explained that these tree-planting events occur every spring and fall as part of the city's mission to enhance its tree canopy. "Tree plantings are both fun and productive," Moore stated. "It’s rewarding to see how the Covington community gets engaged and takes pride in beautifying its surroundings."
Moore emphasized the long-term health and environmental benefits of tree-lined streets, noting that they contribute to better health outcomes for residents while filtering pollutants from air and groundwater, providing shade, and reducing street noise.
The species selected for planting include black gum (tupelos), Kentucky yellowwood, redbud, hawthorn, and Osage orange cultivars, chosen based on their suitability for specific locations.
