Brendan Sorsby, a redshirt sophomore quarterback, has been named to the Davey O'Brien QB Class of 2024. The announcement was made on Tuesday. Sorsby had already appeared on the midseason watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award last week and is now among the 35-player QB class candidates.
In his debut season with the Bearcats, Sorsby has achieved notable statistics, completing 172 of 262 passes for 2,108 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. His performance places him third in passing yards within the Big 12 Conference, third in completion percentage at 65.6%, and fourth in passing efficiency with a rating of 149.1. Under his leadership, Cincinnati's offense averages 438.9 yards per game, ranking third in their conference.
Sorsby stands out as one of only three FBS players this season to have surpassed both 2000 passing yards and recorded over 15 passing touchdowns alongside five or more rushing touchdowns. He shares this distinction with Dillon Gabriel from Oregon and John Mateer from Washington State.
The next phase will involve narrowing down to the award's top 16 semifinalists from these quarterbacks. Selection will rely on votes from the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee and bonus ballots derived from fan voting.
For a fifth consecutive year, fans can participate in voting through social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter by engaging with posts featuring their favorite quarterbacks under @daveyobrien. Voting concludes on Friday, Nov. 8 at midnight Eastern Time; semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 12, finalists on Nov. 26, and the winner revealed live during The Home Depot College Football Awards broadcasted by ESPN on Dec.12.
The Davey O'Brien Award began as a regional honor before expanding nationwide to recognize outstanding quarterbacks who exemplify teamwork and leadership both academically and athletically while reflecting Davey O’Brien’s character traits.
