The University of Cincinnati athletics department has announced the passing of Dr. Jim Ellis, O.D., who served as the team optometrist for over four decades. Ellis joined the Bearcats in 1979 and was a key figure in concussion and neuro-visual research within UC's Athletics Department. His work extended to collaborations with the Department of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and the Department of Neurology.
In 1987, Ellis and his family established an endowed Student Athletic Trainer Scholarship aimed at supporting students in the Athletic Training program within the College of Allied Health Sciences. In recognition of his contributions, Ellis received the inaugural Bob Goin Service Award in 2021 during the Legion of Excellence event. This award honors distinguished service to UC Athletics by a coach, administrator, or employee.
Beyond his role with athletics, Ellis contributed significantly to University Health Services as an optometrist, offering support to the general student body and lecturing on ocular trauma to residents, fellows, and students.
Ellis also had a passion for car racing and participated in events such as Italy's Mille Miglia, Europe's Monte Carlo Grand Prix, and America's Sebring 12-hour race.
He graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in 1965 before earning his Doctor of Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry in 1969. Details regarding service arrangements will be provided later.
