This opening invites customers in Tinley Park to experience grocery shopping with Amazon Fresh, both in-store and online," said Shane Nelson, Amazon Fresh regional manager, in the press release. "We’re excited for customers to see our wide selection of national brands, high-quality produce, meat and seafood, and curated array of their favorite local items and fresh-prepared meals. Our team is proud to continue expanding in Greater Chicago and build new relationships with our customers and important local organizations in the area like Illinois Food Bank."
According to CNBC, Amazon is restarting the expansion of its Fresh supermarket chain after a yearlong pause. CEO Andy Jassy initially halted the rollout in early 2023 due to unmet expectations. Despite this pause, Amazon has opened new Fresh stores in various states including California, Illinois, Maryland, and New Jersey and plans to open more locations this year. The company is also redesigning its stores by incorporating features like Krispy Kreme stalls and removing the cashierless Just Walk Out technology in favor of Dash Carts. Amazon's goal is to strengthen its physical presence in the grocery market which remains crucial for growth despite its 1.4% share compared to major competitors like Walmart and Kroger.
Amazon also opened a Fresh store in Arlington Heights this summer.
