On May 29, 2024, Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and a member of President Biden’s Cabinet representing America's more than 33 million small businesses, visited New York City. Accompanied by Congresswoman Grace Meng, Guzman aimed to highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration’s economic agenda is fostering entrepreneurship among diverse communities.
In the morning, Guzman and Meng visited the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Queens College. They met with university leaders to discuss how both the SBDC and SBA can support local small businesses. Following this meeting, they toured two AANHPI women-owned small businesses in Flushing: HA Bakery and New York Digital City Inc., underscoring these businesses' contributions during Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.
Later in the day, Guzman and Meng joined New York City Councilmember Francisco Moya at Kafra’s Bakery in Jackson Heights. This Latino-owned bakery exemplifies the "Small Business Boom" under the Biden-Harris Administration. Since President Biden took office, there have been over 17.5 million new business applications nationwide, including more than 1 million in New York State alone.
