Town of Marana issued the following announcement on Oct. 23.

Reuben Nuñez was appointed Interim Police Chief effective October 21 by Interim Town Manager Terry Rozema. Nuñez previously served the Town of Marana as the Deputy Chief and he is filling a role previously held by Rozema.

“The Town is fortunate to have an experienced professional like Interim Chief Nuñez to step in and take the helm of the Marana Police Department,” said Rozema. “His knowledge and dedication will serve the Town well in ensuring our community continues to receive unparalleled police services.”

Nuñez started his law enforcement career in January 1984 with the Tucson Police Department, where he served for 27 years. During his tenure, he worked in the patrol, major offenders, detectives, fugitive, and gang units. Nuñez rose through the ranks, serving in several command assignments such as Human Resources, Special Investigations, Violent Crimes and the Chief’s Office. He was recognized for his service by way of various commendations and medals to include; Medal of Valor, Medal of Merit, Unit Medal, Medal of Service, and Distinguished Career Medal. He retired from Tucson Police as a captain in 2011. 

In September 2011, Nuñez was hired as the Deputy Chief for the Marana Police Department. He has served in both Support Services and the Field Services Bureau.  He recently received the Arizona Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ALEAP) Commission’s Robert J. Devries Leadership in Accreditation Award for his success and advancement of police accreditation in the State of Arizona.

Nuñez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Justice System Policy & Planning from Northern Arizona University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy session 260, a graduate of SMIP and Northwestern University Police Staff and Command.

Nuñez is married to his wife, Martha, of 39 years. They have three children and four grandchildren.
