Boise State University issued the following announcement on May 26.
MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal, who is now entering her third season at the helm of the Cardinals, announced the addition of Paloma Gómez Rengifo (Madrid, Spain) to its 2020-21 roster.
Gómez Rengifo becomes the 10th member of this year's recruiting class, joining previous signees Halle Baisas (Louisville, KY), Rachel Bohn (Harrisburg, PA), Maureen Donegan (New City, NY), Michaela Graney (Cape Town, South Africa), Emma Hilton (Clark, NJ), Elyse Horner (Oconomowoc, WI), Hannah Johnston (Falls Church, VA), Kerrianne McClay (Green Village, NJ) and Callie Srader (Richmond, VA). Graney has a spring under her belt with the Cardinals, having arrived to Ball State in January. McClay is transferring from the University of Delaware, where she had an excellent freshman campaign. Gómez Rengifo will be a part of an exciting group of eight true freshmen making their mark at Ball State in 2020. The veteran core of Ball State Field Hockey is returning and will be boosted by the addition of young talent in 2020.
Gómez Rengifo most recently finished in the top ten amongst Spanish Premier Division scorers this year. She was the second leading scorer for her team, Club de Campo Villa de Madrid. She has also made waves on the Spanish national level as a six-time youth gold-medalist.
Gómez Rengifo first made a name for herself in 2015 when her club team, Club de Campo, earned a gold medal at the Spanish U16 Championship. Gómez Rengifo helped Club de Campo take home the silver medal at the Spanish U14 Championship in Barcelona that same year. In 2016, Gómez Rengifo and her club continued to dominate as they earned back-to-back gold medals at the Spanish U16 and U18 Championships; played in her hometown and in the city of Santander. Gómez Rengifo led Club de Campo to the Spanish U18 Championship title in 2017. She captured two silver medals in 2018, once at the Spanish U18 Championship and then again at the Spanish Indoor Championship. During that year, Paloma continued her success with her club winning the gold medal at the 2018 Spanish Cup. In 2019, Gomez Rengifo made her debut for Club de Campo's senior team in the final game of the Madrid Cup and captured the gold medal.
Gómez Rengifo was selected in 2017 to represent Madrid in the U16 Regional Championship, taking home the silver medal. That same year she was also selected for the U18 Regional Madrid Team. Gómez Rengifo has had much success representing Madrid as well as competiting for her club team.
"Paloma is a dangerous attacker— she is going to bring relentless energy to our press and offensive efforts," Bernthal said. "In addition to her skill on the pitch, our conversations in the recruiting process made it clear that she is a great fit with our team culture. She has a most wonderful family back in Spain and will be a fantastic addition to our Ball State community."
The Ball State field hockey team is excited to welcome Paloma Gómez Rengifo to the Cardinal family and are looking forward to returning to the Briner Sports Complex for the 2020 season.
