Pima County officials and the YMCA of Southern Arizona have announced the Kino Community Center will again be under the county’s management, expanding the sports entertainment options available at the Kino Sports Complex.

The YMCA will continue to provide programs and services at the community center.

“Through our ongoing partnership with Pima County, the Y will continue to provide much-needed services to South Tucson – including our All Kids Swim program that serves more than 270 children, ensuring their safety in and around water,” Kurtis Dawson, president and CEO of the YMCA of Southern Arizona, said.  “We are grateful for our partnership with the county, which allows us to serve so many in such a tangible way.”

The Kino Community Center was built by the county in 1995 and was leased to the YMCA of Southern Arizona from 2011 until this year. Since Major League Baseball's spring training teams left the Tucson market in 2011, the county has repurposed Kino Sports Complex. More than 150 organizations book the facility every year.

“Adding the recreation center to our amenities will help us be a more versatile venue and expand the types of groups and event sponsors we market the complex to,” Kino Sports Complex director Reenie Ochoa said. “But it’s also really important that we’re able to continue to support the neighborhood through continuing some of the YMCA’s programs. Combined with the adjacent Sam Lena Park, we will remain a recreation resource for the communities along East Ajo Way.”

The turnover of the center to the county will take effect on July 1.
